Revit Model Quality: 10 Things to Check Before Delivering a Project
A Revit model can look finished and still contain problems.
Before delivering a project, it’s worth taking a few minutes to check the model, views, sheets, links, and final drawings. A simple quality-control checklist can help you catch mistakes before the client, consultant, or next person working on the project finds them.
If you’re new to Revit, start with these 10 checks.
1. Review Revit Warnings
Start by checking the warnings in your model.
Go to Manage → Inquiry → Review Warnings and look through the list. Warnings can identify problems such as overlapping elements, duplicate information, or other conditions that Revit wants you to review.
Don’t simply try to get the warning count to zero. Instead, understand what each important warning means and fix problems that could affect the project.
Beginner tip: If you don’t understand a warning, don’t ignore it. Search the warning message or ask someone experienced before deleting or changing anything.
2. Check Linked Models
If your project uses linked architectural, structural, MEP, civil, or consultant models, check them before delivery.
Go to Manage → Manage Links and make sure:
- The correct files are linked.
- The links load correctly.
- The models are positioned correctly.
- You aren’t using an outdated consultant model.
- Important links haven’t accidentally been removed or moved.
A good host model is not enough if it’s referencing the wrong consultant information.
3. Verify Coordinates and Model Position
Coordinates become especially important when multiple Revit models need to work together.
Check that your model is positioned correctly relative to the site and other consultant models. If the project uses shared coordinates, make sure you’re following the project’s established coordinate system.
Important: Don’t change coordinates just because something looks wrong. Coordinate changes can affect linked models and other project files. If you’re unsure, ask your BIM manager, project manager, surveyor, or another experienced team member.
4. Check Levels and Grids
Levels and grids are fundamental reference elements in a Revit model.
Review your plans, sections, and elevations and check:
- Level names
- Level elevations
- Grid names
- Grid locations
- Building elements associated with the correct levels
Pay particular attention after major design changes. A new floor or building change can create problems that aren’t immediately obvious.
5. Review Views and Sheets
Before delivery, go through the Project Browser and review your views and sheets.
Look for:
- Incorrect view names
- Unused working views
- Incorrect scales
- Missing views
- Incorrect crop regions
- Views that should be on sheets but aren’t
- Inconsistent graphics
Don’t delete every view that looks unnecessary. Some may be required for documentation, coordination, or future work.
The goal is to make the project organized and easy for another person to understand.
6. Check View Templates and Graphics
If your project uses view templates, make sure the final views are using the correct settings.
Check several plans, sections, elevations, and details side by side.
Look for differences in:
- Scale
- Detail level
- Line weights
- Visibility
- Annotation
- Graphic styles
Two similar views should normally look consistent if they’re intended to be part of the same drawing set.
7. Review Tags, Dimensions, and Schedules
Zoom into your final drawings.
Check dimensions, room tags, door and window tags, text, keynotes, section references, elevation markers, and other annotations.
Look for:
- Missing tags
- Overlapping text
- Incorrect dimensions
- Incorrect references
- Unreadable annotations
Don’t forget schedules.
If a schedule shows a quantity, make sure you understand what the schedule is actually counting. A number generated by Revit isn’t automatically the correct number for your project requirements.
8. Clean Up Unnecessary Content
Revit projects can accumulate unused families, types, views, groups, and other content during development.
The Purge Unused tool can help remove unused content.
However, don’t purge everything without thinking.
Some content may be required for future revisions, project standards, or other workflows. Always make sure the content is genuinely unnecessary before removing it.
A clean model is useful, but an over-cleaned model can create problems later.
9. Check Worksharing
If you’re working with a workshared model, make sure the latest changes have been synchronized correctly.
Before delivery, check:
- Has everyone finished their work?
- Has the latest work been synchronized?
- Are important elements still owned by someone?
- Are you working with the correct central or cloud model?
- Are you delivering the correct version?
For important models, follow your company’s procedures for synchronization, backups, auditing, and model maintenance.
10. Check the Final Deliverables
This is one of the most important checks.
Don’t assume the project is finished just because the Revit model looks good.
If you’re delivering PDFs, open the final PDF.
If you’re delivering DWG files, open and inspect the exported drawings.
Check:
- Sheet numbers
- Sheet names
- Drawing scales
- Line weights
- Text
- Title blocks
- Revision information
- Viewports
- Cropping
- PDF page order
- Blank or unexpected sheets
A drawing that looks correct in Revit can still have an issue in the final exported file.
A Simple Revit Quality Checklist
Before delivering a project, ask yourself:
- Have I reviewed the warnings?
- Are all important links correct?
- Are the coordinates and model position correct?
- Are levels and grids correct?
- Are the views and sheets organized?
- Are the graphics and view templates consistent?
- Are tags, dimensions, and schedules correct?
- Is unnecessary content cleaned up?
- Is the workshared model properly synchronized?
- Have I checked the actual final deliverables?

A good model should be understandable, coordinated, organized, and ready for the next person to use.
